Muscat International passenger numbers jump 18% in June

Muscat International Airport has reported an 18% increase in passenger traffic for June 2016, including those in transit.
Figures show 5,694,468 passengers used the airport last month compared to 4,844,348 passengers in June 2015.
The number of arriving passengers hit the 2,864,137 mark, an increase of 18% compared to 2,428,167 arrivals during the same period in 2015.
The number of departing passengers also rose 18 to 2,823,013 in June 2016 compared to 2,396,804 in June 2015.
The overall increase in passenger traffic at Muscat International Airport was attributed to a boost in the number of flights to and from the hub including those operated by Oman Air, Kuwait Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines and KLM.
Statistics also show an increase in air freight handled at Muscat International Airport in 2016. Aviation statistics from June 2016 reported the handling of 74,875 tons of freight, compared to 66,508 tonnes in June 2015.
At Salalah Airport, traffic increase a 13% in June to 492,964 compared to 435,568 passengers in June 2015. Air freight, however, decreased by 21%.
Salalah Airport is shaping up to witness a busy August as tourists flock to the Dhofar region to experience the Khareef (monsoon) season, which this year has been described as “exceptional” by local authorities.
Continuous rain has already covered plains and mountains with lush greenery and flowing of spas and springs.
A report in the Times of Oman said Dhofar was already receiving thousands of tourists daily.
