Sydney is gearing up for a bumper tourist season, with 10 million visitors expected to head to the city this summer.
Destination NSW revealed that the projected total would include both overnight and day visitors, driving an estimated AU$5 billion (US$3.7bn) in tourism receipts.
In total, Sydney is expected to welcome 18m visitors in the six-month October-March period, 10m of whom are forecast to arrive during the three summer months. Total room nights spent in the city during the summer period are likely to exceed 30m.
“Summer is an absolutely magical time to visit Sydney and make the most of the city’s famous coastal lifestyle with more than 90 beaches on offer,” said NSW’s Minister for Trade, Tourism & Major Events, Stuart Ayres.
“Last summer, we welcomed more than 9.2 million visitors who spent more than AU$4.9 billion in Sydney, meaning tourists are taking advantage of the endless entertainment, dining and major event options after a day on the beaches.
“From a day at the Test at the historic SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground) to a ride on one of Sydney’s iconic ferries, summer is an exciting, vibrant and beautiful time in Sydney, and we look forward to more visitors from near and far over the next few sunny months,” he added.
Sydney’s summer calendar for 2016-17 includes the New Year’s Test (Australia vs. Pakistan) at the SCG, the APIA International Sydney tennis tournament, HSBC Sydney Sevens rugby, the Egyptian Mummies exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum and the Sydney Festival.
