ME hotel room pipeline up 11%: STR

The number of hotel rooms pipelined for the Middle East increased 10.8% in November compared to November 2015, according to data research company STR.
The November 2016 pipeline report revealed 159,922 rooms in 560 projects “under contract” in the Middle East and 58,878 rooms in 316 projects under contract in Africa.
Under contract data includes projects under construction, final planning and planning stages, but does not include projects in the unconfirmed stage.
In the under construction category, the Middle East reported 85,448 rooms in 267 hotels, up 3.6% year on year, the London-based company said.
The number of rooms in Africa rose 10.9% compared with November 2015 with 30,043 rooms under construction in 165 hotels – a 10.9% increase year-on-year.
Saudi Arabia reported the most rooms in construction with 37,864 rooms in 83 hotels followed by the UAE with 26,889 rooms in 97 hotels, the report said.
Qatar has 8,748 rooms under construction in 36 hotels, while Egypt has 5,645 rooms in 16 hotels, STR said.
