The recovery of Macau’s lucrative gaming sector is now in full swing, after the city’s casino revenues increased for a fifth consecutive month.
Gaming revenues had fallen for 26 straight months until August 2016, following a Chinese government crackdown on corruption and money laundering.
But the rebound now appears to be sustained, after city authorities revealed that the sector’s turnover reached MOP19.82 billion (US$2.42bn) in December 2016, up 8% year-on-year.
And while the monthly figures do compare to poor revenues in the previous year, the recovery towards the end of the year means that Macau’s cumulative casino revenues for 2016 totalled MOP223.21bn, just 3.3% down compared to 2015.
