UK airport operator BAA will not be taking fingerprints of passengers using Heathrow’s new Terminal 5, following doubts over the legality of such a move, The Scotsman reported.
BAA had hoped to fingerprint T5 domestic-flight passengers and international passengers transferring on to domestic flights but the report said the Information Commissioner’s Office was concerned it might breach the Data Protection Act.
“Following a meeting with all relevant parties, including the Information Commissioner and the Border and Immigration Agency, the introduction of fingerprinting for domestic passengers and international passengers transferring on to domestic flights at Heathrow will be temporarily delayed,” BAA was quoted saying.
The terminal, which opened yesterday, will be capable of handling 30 million passengers a year.
