South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has unveiled plans to ensure its target of 10 million tourists annually by 2012 is met.
Arirang News said the ministry was relaxing rules where those building a tourism district would get authorisation in just 10 months, unlike the previous 37 months.
The report said marketing plans included promotions targeting the Chinese market. For three months this summer, during the Beijing Olympics, Chinese and Korean nationals won’t need a visa to travel between the two countries and specialised travel packages will be launched for Chinese and Japanese tourists.
The successful “Korea, Sparkling” campaign would be upgraded and run again from 2010 through 2012, the report said.
The ministry predicts that tourism revenue could increase to US$13 billion by 2012, a huge rise when compared to almost US$6 billion last year.
