Thai Airways has received the support of Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to proceed with the purchase of 65 new aircraft, The Nation has reported. THAI’s plan is to retire 47 of its current fleet, replacing them with newer models over the next 10 years. The total value of the new planes is thought to be in the region of THB400 billion (US$11.8 billion).
“Initially THAI will have to replace its very old aircraft and the investment must be made beforehand as the purchase will take around three to five years,” said NESDB Secretary General Ampon Kittiampon.
Of the 65 new planes, 16 will be used on long-haul routes, seating 300-500 passengers, 29 for mid to long-haul routes, seating 250-300, and 20 will be used for domestic services for 150-250 passengers.
THAI, like all of Thailand’s carriers, has suffered badly from the current crises hitting the aviation industry. However THAI Chairman, Chaiwat Kittipornpaibul, the national carrier’s plans to purchase aircraft rather than lease would extend the lifespan of aircraft, saving costs in the long run.
