Las Vegas Sands Corp, operator of international casinos including the Venetian Macau, is considering investing US$12 billion to build a strip of casinos in Goa, India. The Times of India has reported that the project may turn the former Portuguese colony into a new Macau.
“We would like to build a Cotai Strip in India,” Las Vegas Sands’ Chairman Sheldon Adelson said at an opening ceremony for the new Four Seasons Macau. “We would be happy to spend $12 billion there,” he continued, adding it welcomed an invitation from the Indian government.
The Cotai Strip, in China’s own former Portuguese enclave, was modelled on Las Vegas’ own main gambling strip and has seen huge investment and development in recent years. Las Vegas Sands reportedly plans to build up to 14 hotels there by 2013.
Adelson visited India prior to arriving in Macau, meeting the nation’s ministers of tourism and trade. However he would not comment on the content or outcome of discussions.
