Indonesian authorities have pledged to stop the loss of forests and species in Sumatra, the BBC has reported. Representatives of the island’s 10 provinces met with the national government and the WWF to agree the new measures at the World Conservation Congress.
Sumatra is home to a number of iconic species such as the tiger, orang-utan, rhinoceros and elephant, but the island has lost about half of its forest cover in the last 20 years.
