The runway at Mangalore airport will be extended by 1,000 feet (305 metres) to 9,000 feet, to include a longer run-off area, India’s Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said. The decision follows the recent crash of an Air India Express jet, which failed to stop on the tarmac and plunged into a ravine at the end of the runway, for the loss of 158 lives. The length of the runway’s run-off area came in for criticism following the incident. Patel said however, that the existing run-off area was “fully compliant” with regulations. The exact cause of the Mangalore crash is still under investigation.
