Malaysian low-cost carrier, AirAsia, is confident of launching 10 new routes in India in the next 18 months, Bernama has reported the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Tony Fernandes, as saying. Fernandes said the carrier had already launched its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tiruchirappalli in south India, and was looking to expand operations.
“AirAsia received overwhelming response for the route. Barely a month after opening the ticket sales for the route, we recorded 100% load factor from 1-18 December,” he told reporters at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, near Kuala Lumpur, while waiting for the arrival of AirAsia’s inaugural Tiruchirappalli flight.
“We are extremely proud of the soaring load factor for this new route. We have created new demands for the market and are very proud to service an under-served sector,” Fernandes added.
AirAsia currently serves the route with direct daily flights using the 180-seat Airbus A320. Tiruchirappalli is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu.
