Japan opens doors to wealthy Chinese

According to a ShanghaiDaily report, the new policy will see visa issued to Chinese citizens inShanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou from 1 July, with expansion to all cities onthe Chinese mainland from July next year.
Those applying for the visas however, must be “well-off”with an annual income of over CNY250,000 (US$36,600), the agency said, withoutdefining what proof of income was required.
Japanhas set the income requirement to prevent tourists illegally overstaying, thereport said. The agency hopes the new visa policy will attract 250,000 moretourists from the Chinese mainland each year in addition to the current 1million.
The Japanese government previously only issued tourist visas to groups ofbetween 5-40 Chinese visitors. The earlier introduction of family visas forChinese tourists did not meet with much success, with only 10 people from fourfamilies having used the facility since its inception last year.
