Qantas has announced plans to cut its first class services on some international flights because of a fall in demand for premium travel caused by the global financial crisis. According to a Channel NewsAsia report, the Australian carrier has removed first class offerings from its Sydney-San Francisco, Sydney-Buenos Aires, and Melbourne-Hong Kong-London routes. The measure will be in place from 6 July to 31 October 2009.
“Qantas, like many other international airlines has experienced reduced demand in premium cabins,” Qantas spokesperson, Rob Gurney, was reported saying in a statement.
“We have temporarily taken our first-class offering off our San Francisco , Buenos Aires and Melbourne-Hong Kong-London route and will now be servicing these routes with business, premium economy and economy classes only.”
Some customers would now get a first-class seat at business-class prices, a separate Qantas spokesperson was reported saying.
“We’ll sell it as a business class service so they’ll get business-class product and service but some people will be sitting in a first-class seat,” the spokesperson told AFP.
