Ailing national carrier, Air India (AI), is expected to see some new faces as part of plans for a two-year programme to revamp the loss-making airline. Anil Mathur reports that changes may include the appointment of a Chief Operating Officer, a post that is commonplace in most airlines, but which AI has never had. Other positions however, may be under threat. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in Delhi on 7 July that new Board members would also be appointed. The hunt for the COO position will be mounted via an international campaign.
Meanwhile Bloomberg has reported that the government has approached Ratan Tata to head an advisory panel being set up to turn around the national carrier. Citing a Straits Times report, Bloomberg said that the Tata Group Chairman has agreed in principle, and will now attempt to bring in a retired Singapore Airlines official to be part of the panel. An announcement is likely later this month.
Tata’s involvement has historical connections; the carrier was founded as Tata Airlines in 1932 by Ratan Tata’s predecessor JRD Tata. It was renamed Air India in 1946.
