Perth, Western Australia has won the rights to be the next host destination for the 7th International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE7), to be held in 2011.
Officially announced at the 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth, held in Beijing, China, the 7th ISDE Symposium will be held in conjunction with the existing Western Australian Land Information System (WALIS) Forum.
This combined international symposium is anticipated to attract an audience of over 1100 delegates from Australia and around the world.
Over $2.1 million in direct delegate expenditure will be injected into the local economy as a direct result of the five day event.
Digital Earth is the visionary concept, popularised by former US Vice President Al Gore, for a virtual and 3-D representation of the Earth. It combines digital knowledge archives from around the planet with vast amounts of scientific, natural and cultural information to describe and understand the Earth, its systems and human activities.
The Perth Convention Bureau worked closely with WALIS Director, Dr Marnie Leybourne to address the strict criteria required to be selected above interstate competitors as the city to move forward with the ISDE7 Australia bid.
As the successful Australian city, the Perth Convention Bureau’s Business Development Manager, Ms Kara Coote accompanied Dr Leybourne to Beijing in early September to formally present Perth’s bid to host ISDE7.
Following the presentation in Beijing, the Executive Committee members of the International Society for Digital Earth equated the bid to one of Olympic standard.
In addition to bidding support, the Perth Convention Bureau provided destination sponsorship to support marketing activities that will be undertaken by WALIS to ensure a successful 2011 Symposium is held in Perth.
