AirAsia RedRun Penang draws in over 4,000 runners

AirAsia successfully hosted its much-anticipated RedRun community event in Penang on Sunday, 28th September.

The event’s first-ever staging in Penang was supported by Penang Global Tourism, and drew in more than 4,000 participants from across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and other regions to Gurney Plaza.

Following successful editions in Bali, Surabaya, and most recently in Singapore, Penang was chosen as the newest RedRun destination for its vibrant community spirit and reputation as a leading tourist hub, marking another milestone in the Group’s RedRun series.

The event was graced by the presence of Penang State executive commissioner for tourism and creative economy Wong Hon Wai, AirAsia Aviation Group chief executive Bo Lingam, and airline chief commercial officer Amanda Woo.

The three jointly did the flag-off for the 10KM race category.

A rewarding milestone

Woo said of the event: “Bringing RedRun to Penang for the very first time has been a truly rewarding milestone. The overwhelming response of over 4,000 runners reflects the community’s passion for health, wellness, and togetherness. As a proudly homegrown brand, AirAsia remains committed to creating meaningful experiences that go beyond travel, connecting people through events that celebrate both lifestyle and community. More than just an airline, AirAsia is an ecosystem that connects people, places and passion. RedRun reflects our commitment to promoting a well-balanced lifestyle, while staying true to our core values of making a meaningful impact and celebrating every individual.”

Woo added that RedRun not only inspires healthier lifestyles but also aims to drive inbound runners to experience AirAsia’s runs across different destinations by strengthening tourism, fostering cultural exchange and showcasing the vibrant diversity of the regions the airline flies to.

Likewise, Wong declared: “I would like to congratulate AirAsia for bringing RedRun to Penang for the very first time. Penang is proud to host many world-class sporting events, with the Penang Bridge International Marathon being the flagship event that attracts thousands of participants annually. With today’s remarkable turnout, I believe the AirAsia RedRun has the potential to grow into another much-anticipated annual event in our sporting calendar, inspiring more people to embrace healthy lifestyles while showcasing Penang’s vibrant tourism and community spirit. We look forward to supporting more initiatives like this that not only benefit our people but also further elevate Penang as a leading destination for both wellness and tourism.”

A run for everyone

AirAsia RedRun in Penang featured 3KM, 5KM and 10KM race categories, welcoming participants of all ages and fitness levels.

The Penang community formed the largest turnout with 32% of total runners, followed by Kedah and Perak, underscoring the strong support from the northern region.

Many participants travelled from across Malaysia to be part of this much-anticipated debut, with close to 28 percent more joining in from international destinations, underscoring the event’s growing significance both locally and internationally.

The Penang edition of RedRun also reflects AirAsia’s continued efforts to bring communities together while encouraging healthy lifestyles in some of the region’s most exciting cities.

With its growing presence across ASEAN and beyond, AirAsia remains dedicated to fostering connections through both travel and meaningful lifestyle events.
