The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) have launched the landmark exhibition, Proximities, showcasing contemporary visual arts from the UAE in Korea. Inaugurated on 15 December by UAE Minister of Culture, Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, the exhibition is part of the Abu Dhabi Festival Abroad programme and features over 110 works by 47 UAE-based artists, including 33 Emiratis.
Proximities marks the largest exhibition of Emirati art in East Asia, highlighting the UAE's commitment to cultural exchange and artistic collaboration. "The opening of the Proximities exhibition embodies the UAE's vision to build bridges of international cooperation," said Al Qassimi. The exhibition, co-curated by Maya El Khalil and Eunju Kim, explores themes of cultural dialogue and artistic evolution across three generations of artists.
Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF, emphasised the exhibition's role in enhancing artistic exchange between the UAE and Korea, stating, "Proximities presents the experiences of three generations of UAE-based artists who have grown up amid the UAE's rapidly evolving cultural landscape."
The exhibition, running until 29 March, is part of a three-year collaboration between ADMAF and SeMA. Choi Eunju, General Director of SeMA, noted, "Proximities offers a significant opportunity for the two nations to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries."
Proximities not only showcases the diversity of Emirati visual arts but also strengthens the cultural ties between the UAE and Korea, fostering dialogue and creativity.
