Indonesia’s mangrove forests halved since 1982

The total area of Indonesia’s mangrove forests has shrunk from 4.2 million hectares in 1982 to just 2 million hectares, according to an NGO. The Jakarta Post reported the People’s Coalition for Justice in Fisheries (KIARA) as saying that the expansion of fish farms was the main cause, but that the expansion of oil palm plantations has also affected coastal regions.
