ABTA has asked the European Commission to provide compulsory financial protection scheme for all airline passengers, it was revealed today. The EU is reviewing its Air Passenger Rights legislation and ABTA is urging the UK Government to support the scheme. It is the one of the biggest parts of travelling that is not covered financially. The UK Government have resisted in the past for fear that they would be challenged under EU law. However, new EU law will remove this possibility and make it easier for the UK to back the regime. If they are successful, there will be an opportunity to help customers who are now reluctant to fly and cut financial risks for airlines.Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said: “The Government has consistently made it clear that it would not take unilateral action to bring airlines within the scope of a financial protection scheme. The European Air Passenger Rights consultation has provided us an ideal opportunity to press the case for change and if the Government has any concern for consumer interests it must support us.”
