ABTA has launched a campaign to ride the travel industry of ‘thousands of unnecessary rules, guidelines and restrictions’. The association has called on travel agents and tour operators to tell them about any regulations they feel are hampering the industry and therefore help remove red tape. It has been spurred by recent support from tourism minister John Penrose MP after his visit to ABTA’s offices. Christine Farnish, who is chairing ABTA’s de-regulatory efforts and is policy chief at Barclay’s, said the process could help save money in compliance and operating costs. “The Government is serious about wanting to cut red tape and as an industry, we need to seize this opportunity to highlight which rules are unnecessary, add extra cost to our businesses for no gain or are simply out of date,” she explained. “We will be submitting a report direct to the tourism minister and we’ve already got a hit list of regulations that should be chopped ranging from unnecessary rules to well-intentioned but poorly drafted rules.” To have your say, email consultations@abta.co.uk.
