ABTA has warned its members not to rebook customer holidays from Monster Travel following the agency’s cease of trading yesterday. “As Monster Travel was a managed branch of The Freedom Travel Group, this company will be honouring all bookings,” the association said today. It added that if agents encouraged customers to book they would face the risk of compensation claims should consumers end up double-booked. Monster Travel ceased trading yesterday after just over two years in business. It was founded by ex-TUI worker David Hawkes and Julie Gilmore, who previously worked at Hays Travel. “The business was a Freedom Travel Group member that sold package holidays and also from time to time repackaged holidays under our ATOL bond,” said Freedom Travel Group Managing Director Jane Atkins. “Under our managed agent agreement with ABTA we will take on all forward bookings, ensuring that customers travel as planned and that trade suppliers are paid. We are very disappointed and saddened that Monster Travel is no longer in a position to trade.” The Newcastle-based agency employed 94 people, 40 of which had only joined the company from another closed agency, Freedom Direct, last April. Those with bookings have been advised to call Freedom on 01782 828620.
