Plans to revise the 1990 Package Travel Directive have been met with enthusiasm from the ABTA.As more customers use the Internet to book holidays from different operators and after recent financial confusion from airlines going bust, the EU has recognised that the directive is out of date.John Dalli, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, told the European Parliament yesterday that the initiative needed to be evened out to protect both travel agents and passengers.Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive was “encouraged” by the comments and particularly welcomed the concern raised over airline insolvency. He said: “For too long airlines have been allowed to trade without protecting the monies they take from consumers in advance of travel. This puts consumers at risk of financial loss and places tour operators at a significant competitive disadvantage.”He added that the ABTA would be ‘lobbying hard’ to make sure regulation meets the needs of the trade and consumer. He and ABTA’s Head of Public Affairs Luke Pollard will be going to Brussels next week to continue with the process.
