Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal 3 is now fully operational, providing the latest stage of an expansion plan that will see the hub’s annual passenger capacity rise to 20 million by 2012.
Gulf News reported that the AED1 billion (US$272 million) Terminal 3 enable Abu Dhabi International to handle an extra 5 million passengers a year, taking its annual capacity to 12 million. Completion of the Midfield Terminal Complex in 2012 will boost that capacity to 20 million. These projects form part of the Abu Dhabi Airport Company’s (ADAC) AED25 billion development plan for the hub.
Shaikha al Maskari, Vice-President of Corporate Affairs at ADAC, told Gulf News that the airport initiatives are long-term and in line with the Abu Dhabi government’s 2030 strategy, thus making them viable despite the global economic crisis.
“Our initiatives are long-term and based on a 2030 vision; we’re not thinking of tomorrow, we’re thinking of the next 20 years ahead and will introduce more infrastructure and projects along the way,” al Maskari was quoted saying.
Terminal 3, which officially opened in Q4 of last year, covers a built-up area of 88,000m
