Accor slashes Vietnam rates to curb downturn

Accorwill cut room rates at its Novotel properties in Vietnam by half to attract morebusiness, a company executive has said. According to aThanh Nien Daily report, Porntina Tangsaijavitoon, Accor’s Director of Communicationsin Southeast Asia, said Accor would offer rates of US$45 a night for itsNovotel properties in Halong Bay, Nha Trang, Dalat,and the Ocean Dunes Golf & Resort Phan Thiet from July to September.
Tangsaijavitoon told the newspaper that by offeringreduced hotel rates, Accor was promoting Vietnamese tourism and providing amuch needed tourism stimulus. He added that he expects Vietnam’s tourism to see “signs ofrecovery” later this year.
Vietnam’shospitality sector has suffered as a result of the global economic downturn andunder-supply of high-end rooms in key cities, which had previously pushed rateskywards, causing hotels to lose a competitive edge.
The number of foreign arrivals fell 19.1% year-on-yearto 1.9 million in the first six months this year, according to Vietnam’sthe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Accor is currently the largestinternational hotel operator in Vietnamwith 10 existing hotels and 10 development projects in the pipeline.
