Travel agents and airlines gathered at a meeting with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday where industry representatives discussed the issue of commission on air ticket sales. While the airlines contend that the transaction fee is a good and adequate way of settling the remuneration of the agents by the airlines, the agents say that it is commission that is mandatory. They say that in many countries, the airlines are still paying commission to agents, which they are denying to the agents in India.
The DGCA meeting assumes greater importance in the context of the 1 April deadline given by the Kerala High Court to resolve the issue, after agents’ bodies approached it to see that the commission is restored. Currently it is the passenger who has to pay the transaction fee but the commission has to be paid by the airline to the agents. This, too, is a key issue in the controversy.
