The airline’s parent company, Air Bagan Holdings, is controlled by Tay Za, a rich Burmese businessman with close links to the military junta.
The TODAY newspaper cited an email that Air Bagan had sent to about 15 tour operators in Singapore informing them of the suspension.
US sanctions had cut off the airline’s access to its planes’ spare parts and last week, Singapore banks stopped dealing with the airline.
“The final blow has come today, when we were informed our banks in Singapore will no longer deal with us for the time being,” the email said.
Other than Singapore, Air Bagan also flies to Bangkok and Kunming as well 16 domestic destinations in Myanmar.
The Singapore-Yangon route generally serves businessmen. Two other airlines continue to serve the route. SilkAir flies 12 times a week and Jetstar Asia, which is in a code-sharing arrangement with Myanmar Airways International, flies three times a week.
