AirAsia has added a further 100 jets to its record order of 200 Airbus A320neos which it signed for at the Paris Air Show two weeks ago. According to an AFP source from within the company, the carrier has opted for an additional 100 narrow-body jets as it seeks to build its existing fleet from 93 aircraft to 500 by 2020. The A320neo is listed at US$9.1 billion, which takes the value of the original order from US$18.2 billion to approximately US$27 billion. Despite the massive cost of the record-breaking deal, the source told AFP that financing should not be problem.
The bold move comes in response to surging demand for budget air travel and the medium-haul jets are needed to satisfy a growing appetite for regional air transport.
Prior to this order, AirAsia had already purchased 75 Airbus planes and is awaiting delivery of seven aircraft this year. The carrier’s existing fleet already operates 520 flights per day along 160 routes from three bases in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, and is intending to establish new regional operations in the Philippines and Vietnam later this year.
