Low-cost carrier AirAsia is planning a huge expansion in South Asia this year, flying to at least six more cities in India, as well as Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. Bernama reported unnamed industry sources as saying that the airline is expected to start the Kuala Lumpur-Colombo sector in August, with further destinations in India added once new planes arrive.
From September onwards, AirAsia is expected to fly to Chennai and Hyderabad from Bangkok, once Thai AirAsia takes delivery of its new Airbus A320s. The sources reportedly added that AirAsia’s long-haul airline, AirAsia X, is likely to fly to several more routes from Kuala Lumpur to India, namely its capital New Delhi, as well as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Amritsar and Kochi.
According to Bernama, the airline has already posted advertisements for station managers in the seven Indian cities. AirAsia currently only flies to one Indian destination, Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli, with it served from Kuala Lumpur.
AirAsia, which started with only two planes eight years ago, currently has over 75 planes and flies to 65 destinations.
