The Ministry of Civil Aviation’s proposed industry regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, will act as an arbitrator in airfare disputes as part of its mandate. While airlines will still be free to set prices, they will have to provide all ticketing info such as pricing, promotions and seat allocations per fare. The idea is to create transparency in ticket pricing to protect the rights of passengers. Presently air ticketing processes are completely unregulated and poorly understood, sparking fears that the airlines are taking advantage of this obscurity. However according to the Business Standard, airlines are arguing against such regulation which they say is by no means an industry norm. They are also warning that market controlled prices keep the cost of travel down.
