More luggage is being lost or damaged at airports across the world as natural disasters overshadow advances in baggage handling technology, according to an Australian insurance company. Travel Insurance Direct has claimed that 30 million bags were mishandled last year, up 17 percent on 2009 due to the snow and ash cloud flight disruption. “Unfortunately for travellers, growing traffic levels at airports worldwide have combined with extraordinary weather events to increase the chances of your luggage going missing,” said Ian Jackson, general manager at Travel Insurance Direct. “Until recently, airports had been making excellent improvements in their baggage handling processes and technology, but luggage loss is now on the increase again.” Another report by SITA also showed at 12.07 bags per thousand passengers were lost or damaged last year, up from 11.38 per thousand in 2009.
