Aman celebrates Indonesian traditions with the Wayang experience at Amanjiwo and Amandari

The luxury hospitality firm honours traditional puppetry and craftsmanship

As a way of celebrating the living tradition of Wayang or shadow puppetry, Aman’s Indonesian properties Amanjiwo in Java and Amandari in Bali invite guests to embark on immersive new journeys into its enchanting world.

Across the Indonesian archipelago, Wayang is revered as a cornerstone of cultural expression.

With origins dating back over a thousand years, these shadow puppetry performances weave together myth, morality and philosophy through masterful storytelling and musical artistry.

Recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Wayang continues to shape the spiritual and cultural landscape of Indonesia today.

Each region brings its own distinctive shapes, characters and styles, reflecting the diversity of the nation.

Through these curated experiences, Amanjiwo and Amandari offer guests a deeper connection to Indonesia’s cultural legacy, where ancient traditions continue to inspire moments of wonder and discovery.

Amanjiwo: where art, tradition, and gastronomy meet

Nestled in the heart of Java and overlooking the magnificent Borobudur, Amanjiwo invites guests to experience Wayang through an intimate dining experience, where tradition and gastronomy meet.

Two distinct settings are available to suit different moods and preferences.

Through either setting, guests are invited to savour a harmonious evening of storytelling, music and refined cuisine.

A choice of two locations are available:

  • Wayang Dinner in the Village

Set in a nearby village with a traditional Javanese Limasan house as the backdrop, this authentic experience offers a soulful connection to the traditions and spirit of local life.

  • Wayang Dinner at the Pool Terrace

Set against the resort’s timeless backdrop, this performance offers an elegant and atmospheric interpretation of Java’s artistic heritage.

The Wayang performance is brought to life by a family who has lived and breathed Javanese tradition for generations.

Bapak Bandel, a master puppeteer and long-time friend of Amanjiwo, has performed since the resort first opened its doors. His deep-rooted appreciation for Javanese culture has inspired his family to follow in his footsteps.

In this performance, Bapak Bandel takes the role of the dalang (puppet master), accompanied by his wife, Ibu Wiwik, who lends her voice as the pasindhèn (Javanese singer), while their children and grandchildren form the gamelan orchestra.

Amandari: delving into the unique culture of puppetry in Bali

Set in the verdant highlands of Ubud overlooking the Ayung Valley, Amandari offers a playful and insightful exploration of Bali’s Wayang tradition.

Designed for families and curious minds alike, these experiences reveal the meticulous craftsmanship and vivid storytelling that define Balinese shadow puppetry.

  • Puppet-Making Class

A creative and engaging experience for the whole family, where guests will learn to craft their own shadow puppet from cow leather, from sketching to intricate carving.

  • Puppet-Making and Colouring Class

A family-friendly workshop inviting participants of all ages to carve and paint their own unique shadow puppets.

  • Shadow Puppet Performance

A private 45-minute performance telling the captivating tale of Amandari’s tiger stone and the revered sage Maha Rsi Makandeya.

These experiences are guided by a respected Balinese cultural practitioner dedicated to preserving the island’s storytelling traditions.

With deep knowledge of Balinese Wayang and its spiritual significance in local life, they introduce the art form to guests through insightful narration, offering context and meaning behind the characters, and movements, bridging the ancient with the contemporary and creating a thoughtful introduction to Bali’s living heritage.
