As hotel chains run to catch up with demand for hotel rooms in cities around India, Amristar has been earmarked as a place to invest for upscale hotels. “Amritsar, as a key religious destination for millions in India and abroad, has tremendous potential for upscale and five-star hotels,” commented Vandana Kilam, Head of Corporate Communications at IHHR Hospitality, the company that owns Ista Hotel. “Statistics prove that on any given day, the Golden Temple in Amritsar attracts more footfalls than the Taj Mahal,” she told IANS. Traditionally, options available to Indian and international luxury travellers have been limited, while many tours still miss the destination. Kilam says the success of their Ista hotel is testament to the level of demand in the city and the potential that still exists for hotels off the back of religious tourism in the country.
