Carnival Corporation’s Micky Arison has spoken about the challenges the company faces in his first interview since stepping down as its chief executive.
Arison moved into the role of chairman at Carnival Corporation this month after leading the company for 34 years.
He told the Wall Street Journal the company’s biggest challenge is to turnaround the Carnival Cruise Lines brand after a string of bad headlines. These include an engine-room fire on Carnival Triumph earlier this year that left 3,000 passengers stranded for a few days at sea.
Carnival Corp is also owner of Costa Cruises and has been heavily impacted by the Costa Concordia disaster.
In a video interview on WSJ’s site, Arison said: “Clearly we have a couple of brands that need to be turned around and with the cost of fuel and some weak economic conditions in Europe will be the biggest challenge.”
He is also due to keep his office at Carnival despite handing the chief executive role over to Arnold Donald. However, Arison dismissed that the two would share the role.
“It’s not sharing, Arnold will be CEO and my job is to do all I can to help him be successful,” he said.
