Tourist arrivals into Singapore dipped in July 2008, reflecting economic concerns and high oil prices.
Last month, 916,000 foreigners visited the city, a drop of 3.8% from last July’s 953,000 visitors. It was better than June 2008’s 817,000, the Singapore Tourism Board said.
Four of the top 15 visitor-generating countries grew year-on-year. These are Vietnam (17.3%, with 29,000 visitors); Germany, (8.3%, 13,000); India (7.1%, 63,000); and Australia (5.1%, 80,000).
Singapore’s top tourists, the Indonesians, dropped in number to 167,000, down 13% while China, dipped 4% to 105,000.
The STB said the downward trend for June and July “reflects the challenging global economic environment and outlook for the tourism sector, which may continue into 2009”.
