SINGAPORE, 12 December 2009 - Hotel guests of Fairmont Singapore got a slice of the fast life with top Jamaican Olympic runner Asafa Powell, who shared tips and tricks from his daily training routine at an exclusive running clinic organised by the hotel, an Official Partner of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Asafa Powell, who won the Gold Medal in the 4 x 100m Relay Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, conducted an hour-long training session for 20 lucky guests at Fairmont Singapore’s sprawling tennis courts, accompanied by Bruce James, President of the MVP Track Club, home to many top Olympic champions. He demonstrated various exercises from his daily regime that prepare him for his power sprints, including high leg kicks, double-quick leg kicks, butt kicks, toe kicks and abdominal exercises. He also performed stretches that he usually does after his rigorous training routine on the track and showed guests how to prevent sore muscles and injuries when running.
Guests who participated in the workshop were thrilled at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get a workout of “Olympic-proportions” as they kicked, jumped and ran across the courts, spurred on by Asafa’s support.
The affable Asafa, who is the 3rd fastest man in history and previously held the world record in the 100m dash at 9.74 seconds, further delighted guests with autographs and a photo-taking session after the clinic. He was later joined by other top Jamaican Olympians – Two-time Olympic 200m Gold Medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown, and 100m World Youth Champion, Dexter Lee, who took photos and interacted with the guests.
