April’s ash cloud disruption had no effect on the growth of RevPAR at London’s hotels and airports, according to data from STR Global. During the height of the closures, Heathrow saw the highest increase in year-on-year rolling-seven average ADR (in which each day is the sum of the six days ahead to even out the effect of weekdays and weekends), which was 24.5%. RevPAR was driven upwards during the closures in mid-April, where London received a 39.6% improvement, Heathrow rose by 68.6% and Gatwick increased 42.3%. Hotel performance then dipped when airports were reopened but was improved in the second wave of closures as travellers coped better with the problem. Other peaks on the graph show the May bank holiday and half term figures.
