Adventure tour operator Intrepid Travel says it has had the strongest April in its 20-year history as people shrug off economic woes and decide to hit the road, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
The Melbourne-based business credited its status as a privately held company for allowing it to react quickly to the downturn, suggesting there are no plans to float the business soon.
Intrepid, which offer tours to six continents, says it is on track to record 11% sales growth for the current financial year following strong interest in tours to Australia, Latin America, Egypt and Morocco.
The company, which promotes itself as offering rugged tours involving close contact with local people, has pushed back hard against its suppliers and staff in an effort to contain costs since the sharp downturn in the global economy in the second half of last year.
“We recorded our strongest sales month ever in September but by the end of October sales were down,” said Mr Wade, the company’s co-founder and chief executive.
