Perth airport is the latest Aussie hub to post fiscal-year growth figures, running counter to the perceived downturn in air traffic, The Australian hasreported. Perth recorded a 6.1% rise inpassenger numbers for the 2008-09 financial year, following similarly positiveresults posted by Melbourne and Brisbane airports inrecent weeks. Melbourne airport reported a 2.1%increase in passenger numbers for the past financial year, while Brisbane airport earlierthis month reported it had broken through the 19 million barrier to establishan annual record.
The number of passengers passingthrough Perth grewby 555,815 to 9.7million, as international passenger numbers grew by 4.2% andthe airport recorded domestic growth of 6.7%, the report stated. The airportattributed the growth to widespread fare discounting and a strong local market.
“The domestic markethas contributed substantially to our increased figures, with our intrastatetravellers performing strongly with 15% growth, particularly fly-in, fly-outtravellers associated with the resource sector,” Perth airport Chief Executive,Brad Geatches, was reported saying.
