Sky-high hotel prices pervading the kiwi hospitality market ahead of the Rugby World Cup (RCW) are boosting trans-Tasman flights. Many Australian rugby fans, deterred by the cost of hotel rooms, are choosing to commute for the games.
With just two weeks to go, organisers must sell 20,000 tickets to reach revenue targets and travel agents are also reporting poor sales as well. Total Sports Travel told the New Zealand Herald that sales of ticket and accommodation packages were “lower than expected” for several reasons.
Company General Manager, Mike Jones, said; “Australians feel it’s over-priced in New Zealand, which obviously it is.” Flooding in Queensland and the global credit squeeze have also taken their toll, but Jones insists that price gouging has been a real problem, adding; “The hotels haven’t been exactly kind in some of their rates. There’s been a lot of greed. Not in all cases, but there have been some examples of price-gouging so to speak.”
