P&O Cruises has announced that the Governor-General of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will officially name its latest superliner Pacific Jewel in a spectacular ceremony at Sydney’s Circular Quay on December 12.
The ship naming will be the highlight of a memorable public event, which will feature a line-up of family entertainment and a stunning fireworks display. All proceeds from the evening will to go to the Governor-General’s nominated charities, the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia and Special Olympics Australia.
Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line was deeply honoured that the Governor-General had accepted its invitation to name its latest ship.
Ms Sherry said the naming of a ship was intended to bestow good luck on a vessel and its passengers.
“It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to a time when ships provided the only link between continents, with the naming conducted by a female – usually a member of royalty or a prominent citizen.
“In keeping with this tradition, we are thrilled that the Governor-General has agreed to fulfil this important role and become the ship’s Godmother.”
Ms Sherry said she hoped Sydneysiders would join in the celebrations at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, with the traditional champagne smashing ceremony to be projected live onto the side of Pacific Jewel.
The evening will also include a celebrity singer, breathtaking aerial circus displays and performers, gourmet food stalls, as well as activities for kids including face painting and photos with Santa. The night will culminate in a fireworks display.
At 70,310 tonnes, Pacific Jewel will carry 2053 passengers and feature one of the largest spas at sea, an open-air deck with aerial stage for circus and music performances, a three-storey atrium foyer and almost 200 private balcony cabins, the most in P&O Cruises’ fleet.
The superliner will offer cruises from Sydney, with her maiden five-night voyage to Tasmania departing on December 13.
