The humble galvanised iron shed in which Qantas was born is about to join the ranks of Uluru and the Sydney Opera House as Australian tourist icons, reports the Australian.
The shed, built in 1922, in Longreach in outback Queensland has been named on the National Heritage List.
Federal Heritage Minister Peter Garrett said the story of Qantas was an incredible one.
“It’s come from very humble beginnings here in a galvanised tin shed,” Mr Garrett told the official naming ceremony on Saturday.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the story of Qantas was a tribute to the frontier, get-up-and-go attitude of pioneering Australians
