Australia’s national parks service has proposed banning people from climbing Uluru, the iconic sandstone monolith also known as Ayers Rock. Safety reasons, as well as cultural and environmental concerns were cited for the move. Uluru is a sacred site among Australian aboriginal communities. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed area draws about 350,000 visitors a year.
