Three recent croc attacks, two of which were fatal, havereportedly prompted calls for a mass slaughter of the reptiles – almost 40years after the saltwater species was first listed for protection. The NT isnow estimated to have the largest croc population in Australia, at more than 80,000.
Under the plan, there will be increased monitoring andtrapping within an expanded management zone around Darwin, with the reptiles either killed orused as stock in crocodile farms. Safari hunters will also be allowed todestroy up to 25 saltwater crocs – all larger than 3.5 metres – as part of atrial designed to provide financial benefits to Aborigines.
Unsurprisingly however, the plan has already encountered opposition.
“I think the Federal Government will oppose it,” TheAustralian reported Nicola Beynon from Humane Society International as saying.
“The idea of getting foreign tourists to come over and topay lots of money just to shoot one crocodile; I think a lot of Australianswill find that repugnant.”
