Australia has urged Japan to abandon its annual whale hunt, Reuters reported, and at the same time launched its own scientific whaling study in the Southern Ocean to prove it was not necessary to kill the ocean mammals to study them.
Japan’s annual cull, carried out under the pretext of scientific research, will begin within weeks. Close to 900 fin and minke whales could be killed in the hunt.
“Modern-day research uses genetic and molecular techniques as well as satellite tags, acoustic methods and aerial surveys rather than grenade-tipped harpoons,” Reuters reported Australian Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, as saying.
