Aviation Minister vows to transform Air India

India’s aviation minister has pledged to carry out “transformational changes” at the loss-making state-run carrier, Air India, in an effort to turn around its finances. ChannelNewsAsia reported Prafut Patel as making the statement following a meeting with met India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to discuss the financial issues facing the airline. “We will bring about transformational changes in the management of the airline from the top,” Patel, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, said at an aviation industry conference in New Delhi. “Air India will be restructured financially, organisationally. There is a need to bring about a transformation in the work ethic and ethos of the company,” he said. Patel also confirmed that an independent board of directors will be appointed, which is likely to include Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group - India’s largest conglomerate.
