British Airways has told Travel Daily it finds Unite’s behaviour ‘extremely disappointing’ and ‘callous’. Unite revealed it was holding a consultative ballot this week to decide whether it should strike again although BA insist it has offered Unite’s members a ‘very fair’ deal, despite its financial circumstances.”It is extremely disappointing that Unite is urging its members to reject our latest offer and apparently preparing for a further strike shortly after the General Election campaign ends,” said BA Consumer PR Manager Amanda Allan.
BA said its offer addressed all the union’s concerns including pay and allocation of routes and crewing levels, while incorporating a popular part-time work option. “If Unite is to put our offer to its members, we believe it should do so fairly, openly and transparently rather than in the closed and rushed manner that is proposed,” added Allan. The airline went further to say Unite was “showing callous disregard for customers and business” as it begins recovery from the airspace shutdown. BA has halted sales on some flights to help travellers return home, particularly inbound flights from Thailand. Those who had booked Bangkok as a stopover have the option to continue to Sydney straight away or move their booking to June. Allan added that contingent plans were in place should a strike occur.
