British Airways has increased its flight schedule during Unite’s threatened strike next week. More cabin crew decided to work this week than was expected and the airline is now hoping to operate more flights from Heathrow over the half-term break. It maintained it will fly 70% of its long-haul schedule from Heathrow and more than 55% of its short-haul operations. Gatwick and London City remain unaffected. BA expects to fly three quarters of its booked passengers who hold a booking between 30 May and 3 June, on either its own flights or through seats on other airlines. “Customers are being contacted throughout today to give them as much notice as possible about their specific travel plans,” it said in a statement released today. Agents and passengers have been asked to check www.ba.com on a regular basis to check if their flight is operating. Meanwhile as strikes continue this week, Unite’s Joint Secretaries Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson have visited the picket lines today at Heathrow to show their support. “The strike is holding strong with crew determined to end the intimidation by the company as they fight to save their jobs,” said Unite’s statement. Woodley said the union was meeting with BA later today.
