Talks between BAA and Unite will begin today in an attempt to stop travel chaos at the bank holiday weekend. Union members from Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen have voted in favour of strikes over a pay row. BAA have offered a 1% pay rise but workers had already accepted a pay freeze last year and changes to their pension. BAA’s owner has put forward another 0.5% but only if changes can be made to a sickness agreement. “We hope that we can quickly conclude an agreement, in the interests of the travelling public, our airlines and our staff, the majority of whom did not vote for a strike,” said BAA. It is thought around half of BAA’s 6,000 workers voted in the ballot, with a 74.1% majority to take action.
