BAA may be forced to sell some its airports following a ruling by the Court of Appeal. An order against the operator may force the airline to sell Stansted and either Glasgow or Edinburgh. A ruling had been placed on BAA previously, but the company had won an appeal against it in December. Now that the ruling has been reinstated, some in the industry have welcomed the monopoly break-up. “The introduction of new operators for some of the UK’s key airports will give consumers greater choice and in turn should raise the standard of service within all UK airports across the board,” said travelsupermarket.com’s Travel Analyst Peter Smith. “Recent threats of strike action from BAA demonstrated the importance of having different operators throughout UK airports. A strike by BAA could have practically paralysed air travel in the UK, particularly in Scotland, due to the monopoly BAA has.”
