The Bahrain Grand Prix has been called off because of the continuing social unrest in the country. BBC Sport reported that the 2011 Formula One season’s curtain-raising event, scheduled for 13 March, has now been temporarily removed from the calendar. The season will now start in Melbourne on 27 March, but authorities didn’t rule out rescheduling the race later in the season.
“We must focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting to a later date,” said Bahrain’s Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa, was reported saying.
The Bahrain race has been on the F1 calendar every year since the track opened in 2004.
